Over the decades, Dexter Carey’s home has weathered many hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina. Living on a fixed income and coping with a disability, Mr. Carey faced challenges as repeated storms damaged his roof, making it difficult to keep water out of his house.  

Mr. Carey found hope through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) Disaster Rebuilding Assistance (DRA) program. 

With a $15,000 DRA grant, he received a roof designated as FORTIFIED by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to withstand high winds, hail and severe thunderstorms.  

“Water was getting inside the house because of the damage to my roof,” said Mr. Carey. “I would have had to live with it, if it wasn’t for the DRA grant.” 

The DRA program provides grants through member institutions, in this case OnPath Credit Union, for repairs, rehabilitation and reconstruction of owner-occupied homes affected by disaster events in federally declared disaster areas in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas.  

“The DRA program is designed to help residents recover, rebuild and prepare for future storms,” said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas. “Seeing the impact it has on homeowners like Mr. Carey demonstrates why these partnerships with our member institutions are so meaningful.”
